ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (May 11) – The FAMU Softball team gave a valiant effort in six hard-fought games during the 2019 MEAC Tournament, coming up just short in the championship round to  archrival Bethune-Cookman.

FAMU (26-27) scored nine runs in each of the first two games against Northern Division foes Delaware State, 9-4 in Wedneday’s opener, and North Division champ Norfolk State, 9-5 in Thursday’s Quarterfinal round.

Those two wins set the stage for the seemingly traditional Friday meeting against rival Bethune-Cookman, which edged out FAMU for the Number One South Division seed by winning their three-game series, two games to one in late April.

And the Friday showdown was Classic, as the two clubs battled into extra innings, with the Wildcats eventually ekeing out a 5-4 win in nine innings.

FAMU, which dropped the Friday game to Bethune-Cookman in 2017 and 2018, winning the title in 2017, outslugged Howard University, 8-5 in Friday’s elimination final to set up an epic rematch with B-CU on Saturday.

Epic was the word to truly describe the Saturday doubleheader, as FAMU rode the pitching of junior Kyaira Brown, who went 2-2 in the tourney, tossed a one-hit, 1-0 shutout of the Wildcats in the opening game to force a second and deciding affair.

The Lady Rattlers scored single runs in the first and third, leaving the bases loaded in the second, a result which cost them dearly in the game.

Bethune-Cookman would score six runs in the bottom of the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth to build an 11-5 lead headed into the final two innings.

The Wildcats would go on to win their 10 MEAC Tournament title, three behind FAMU’s league-leading 13 crowns.

TOURNAMENT NOTES: The trio of Brown, freshman second baseman Kimiya Watkins and senior Tyra Bowers were named to the MEAC All-Tournament team… FAMU coach Veronica Wiggins extended her string of coaching appearances in the MEAC Tournament to 27, as she is the only league coach to have worked in all conference tournaments since they began in 1993….. Seven (7) FAMU players earned 2019 All-Conference honors, headed by first-teamers Brown and senior Alexis Day;  seniorTyra Bowers as a second team selection, followed by third team quartet featuring senior Taylor Rosier, sophomore Hera Varmah, and freshmen Watkins and Seriah Brokenborough.
