GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 22) – The FAMU Women’s Softball team snapped its’ seven-losing skid Friday with a 10-2 romp over Syracuse University in the Bubly/University of Florida Invitational at KSP Stadium.
In the evening game, FAMU dueled unbeaten Florida valiantly for seven innings, falling 4-0 to the Gators (18-0).
In the opener, the Rattlers (1-8) struck for nine hits, scoring the game’s first four runs over the first two innings to go ahead to stay.
FAMU scored two runs in the top of the first and top of the second for a 4-0 lead, then after allowing the Orange (3-7) to score two runs in the bottom of the second, FAMU scored six runs in the top of the fifth to lead, 10-2 and end the game via eight-run rule.
Setting the pace offensively for FAMU Tyra Bowers, Alexis Day and Taylor Rosier, who each had two hits. Rosier and Day each finished with three RBIs, while Kimaya Watkins drove in two runs. Bowers and Jamesia Stoudemire each had and RBI., and they combined to score five runs (Stoudemire, 3, Bowers, 2).
LeeAnn Hayes startedthe game for FAMU, working one and one third innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a strikeout, before being lifted for Kyaira Brown, who worked the final three and two thirds, allowing two hits and fanning two to get the win.
In the second game, FAMU finished with five hits to eight for the Gators, with Watkins leading with two hits, followed by Bowers, Kyaira Brown and Hera Varmah with a hit apiece.
Brown (0-1) went the distance in the loss Friday, allowing four runs on eight scattered hits, with four strikeouts against three walks Friday.
ON TAP: FAMU will face Illinois State (4:00 p.m.) and Syracuse (6:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
