CLEARWATER, Fla.(Mar. 16) – The FAMU Women’s Softball team (8-19) exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the third inning en route to a 16-3 rout of Colgate in the USF Invitational at the Eddie C. Moore Complex Saturday afternoon.
Saturday’s five-inning romp gave FAMU a split of their first four games in the Invitational.
@ On Friday, FAMU dropped their opener to Purdue, 7-3 in eight innings, as the Boilermakers scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to clinch the win.
FAMU tied the game, 3-3, with a run in the bottom of the sixth, before both clubs went scoreless in the seventh.
Kyaira Brown worked eight full innings, allowing seven runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts, getting the decision for FAMU.
In Friday’s second game, FAMU defeated Quinnipiac, 6-5, scoring a single run in the top of the seventh on Seriah Brokenborough’s sacrifice fly.
Brandice Boatwright got the victory in the circle for FAMU, allowing five runs on six scattered hits, with a strikeout.
@ On Saturday, FAMU was blanked in their opener, 8-0 by Providence, which held the Rattlers to one hit in the five-inning game.
Boatwright started the game, but was lifted in the first after allowing six runs on seven hits. Kyaira Brown came on in relief, allowing two runs on four hits, striking our four, in four full innings of work.
Senior Tyra Bowers had the Rattlers’ only hit in the early game, but she had a pair of doubles and three RBIs, scoring two runs in Saturday’s second game, a 16-3 five-inning romp over Colgate.
FAMU scored five runs in the bottom of the first, and one in the second, before Colgate pushed across a run in the top of the third for a 6-1 score.
The Rattlers then broke the game open with an eight-run third for a 14-1 count, before both teams scored two runs in the fourth.
Kimaya Watkins had three hits and four RBIs, while Kyaira Brown had two hits and five RBI. Jamesia Stoudemire finished the game with three hits and three runs scored, while Brokenborough scored three runs for FAMU.
Brown got the pitching victory, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings, striking out two against just one walk.
