TAMPA, Fla. (Mar. 17) – The Florida A&M Lady Rattlers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before eventually dropping a hard-fought 7-3 decision to USF in the final game of the 2019 USF Softball Invitational at the USF Softball Stadium.
FAMU (8-20) took that early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, on a two-run double by freshman Kimaya Watkins, and an RBI ground out by Seriah Brokenborough.
USF (22-11) answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, then tied the game at 3-3, with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Bulls broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs for extend their lead to the 7-3 final margin.
Junior starting pitcher Kyaira Brown (6-8) went the distance for FAMU, allowing seven runs on eight hits in six innings, striking out two, while walking two.
USF held the Lady Rattlers to three hits on the day, one each from Watkins, Tyra Bowers and Jamesia Stoudemire.
USF TOURNEY WRAP: FAMU went 2-3 in the USF Invitational, defeated Quinnipiac, 6-5 on Friday, and Colgate, 16-3 on Saturday. They suffered setbacks earlier to Purdue, 7-3 in eight innings on Friday, and 8-0 to Providence on Saturday.
WHAT’S ON DECK: FAMU will open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play at home this weekend against Savannah State, beginning with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader Saturday, and a 12 noon single game on Sunday.
