Today Marks the Birthday of Legendary FAMU Tennis Player Althea Gibson

FAMU Athletics would like to wish tennis great Althea Gibson a Happy birthday.  The late tennis star won five Grand Slam events, including groundbreaking wins at the French and U.S. Opens.  She is credited with breaking the gender barrier with her historic win at Wimbledon in 1957, where she was awards by Queen Elizabeth II.

Gibson was born on August 25, 1927 in Clarendon County, South Carolina.  With each success of Venus and Serena Williams, they have credited Gibson with being the pioneer that made it possible for them to succeed.  

FAMU Athletics wishes a happy birthday to a great Rattler Hall of Famer.
