SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 14) – After opening their respective Fall and Spring seasons with a challenging array of out-of-conference competition, the Florida A&M University Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams are headed into the stretch portion of their 2018 slate featuring Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opponents.
Both teams swept matches against North Carolina A&T (Friday, March 9) and North Carolina Central (Saturday, March 10) for a 2-0 start to their MEAC Southern Divisional schedule.
@ The Rattler Men (3-8), defending MEAC champions after last year’s breakthrough victory in the MEAC finals, are actually on a three-match win streak with wins over Hampton University (4-2 on March 4 in Orlando), plus the two last week against the Carolina Twins in Savannah, Ga.
On Friday, the men bounced North Carolina A&T, 6-1, and took a 5-2 victory over NCCU on Saturday.
Setting the pace for the Rattler Men so far has been the trio of Noureldin Adam (4-1), Lebelo Mosehle (4-3) and Illya Skoromnyy (3-2) in singles.
In doubles play, Adam and Federico Nani (5-3) have combined for five match wins so far, while Skoromnyy and Jermaine LeGrand have gone 3-1 thus far.
@ Meanwhile, FAMU Women (2-8) have shown strong improvement as several first-year players dot to the up and rising Rattler roster.
The ladies swept both North Carolina A&T and North Carolina Central by identical 6-1 scores, giving them the early lead in the MEAC Southern Division.
Haleigh Porter (3-6), Rachel Harden (2-4), Aylen Hubeart (2-5) and Mia Rakotondrazafy (2-6) are leading the way in singles.
Rakotondrazafy and Karen Machisa top the doubles pairings for FAMU (3-6), followed by Hubeart and Porter (2-6), along with Harden and Sophia Osabouhein (2-1).
WHAT’S ON TAP: The FAMU Men will face bitter rival South Carolina State here in Tallahassee on March 31 (12:30 p.m.) in their next scheduled match, while the Rattler Women head to Orlando to face Northern Illinois (Thursday, March 15) and Southern Miss (Friday, March 16).
