Volleyballers Fall In MEAC Final To Howard, 3-1

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.  (Nov. 20) --- The Howard University Bison captured the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship title on Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over Florida A&M University at the W. P. Hytche Athletic Center.

Nicole Abreu paced Florida A&M  (17-12) with a double-double of 13 kills and 13 digs. Elena Dimitrova added 41 assists and 13 digs. Maria Yvette Garcia registered eight kills and 13 digs, while Valentina Carrasco recorded a team-high 21 digs.

FAMU had its’ long winning streak end Sunday at 14, having not lost since Sept. 20.

Meanwhile. the Bison won their second straight MEAC Volleyball Tournament title and ninth overall. Also, the regular-season MEAC Northern Division champions improved its winning streak to 16 straight, having not lost a match since Sept. 17.

Khaila Donaldson was named the Tournament Outstanding Performer. She averaged a double-double of 13.0 kills per match and 15.6 digs per match. In the championship finale, Donaldson finished with 13 kills, 13 digs and one block. Jessica Young added 13 kills, seven blocks and four digs and Katherine Broussard tallied 11 kills and 18 digs.

Howard (26-5) advances to the NCAA Tournament in December. The Bison will find out their seeding and their opponent during the NCAA selection show on Sunday, November 27 at 9 p.m. The show will air live on ESPNU.

SATURDAY: Florida A&M advances to title game over Maryland Eastern Shore

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.  (Nov. 19) — Maryland Eastern Shore’s hopes for a third MEAC Championship were dashed in the MEAC Semifinals in straight sets (17-25, 18-25, 22-25). For the second straight year it was Florida A&M who delivered the knockout punch, as the Rattlers advance to their first title game since 2012.

The Hawks conclude the season with a record of 18-13 while the Rattlers improve to 17-11.

MEAC Co-Rookie of the Year Nicole Abreu narrowly missed a double-double with ten kills and nine digs while registering a .333 hitting percentage. Libero Valentina Carrasco delivered a match high 15 digs while setter Elena Dimitrova assisted on 22 of the Rattlers’ 33 kills, while supplying six kills on nine attempts with only one error. Dei’Ja Martin blocked six Hawk attempts, one of them solo.

For the Hawks, sophomore Rachel Kayongo put forth a match high 12 kills, adding two digs and a block assist. Freshman setter Ivana Blazevic earned 24 assists and sophomore libero Koya Sowells tallied eight digs.


FRIDAY: Garcia Paces Florida A&M In Opener Past Norfolk State

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (Nov. 18)Maria Yvette Garcia finished one dig shy of a double-double as Florida A&M advanced to Saturday’s semifinal round of the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 win over Norfolk State  at the William P. Hytche Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Garcia registered a match-high 20 kills, nine digs and one block as she hit .531 in the three sets. Elena Dimitrova posted a double-double of 35 assists and 10 digs, while teammate Valentina Carrasco added 10 digs.
