Tallahassee, Fl. (Oct. 29) – The FAMU Women’s Volleyball team struck back against Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, 4-1, (25-16, 25-17, 25-13) Sunday night Al Lawson Center.
FAMU recently lost to the arch-rvial Wildcats in Daytona Beach in October; only to come back with a win and regain their number one seat in the MEAC Southern division. FAMU is now 10-12 overall and 7-1 in the MEAC
The Lady Wildcats brought the heat in the first set defeating FAMU, 18-25, but the Rattlers were determined to take this win with the support of the Marching “100” pep band and several other spirited supporters.
The Lady Rattlers stole the momentum in the second set, 25-16 as the Lady Wildcats began to lose their footing. FAMU picked it up from here and became efficient in the third set, 25-17. In the fourth set the Lady Rattlers sank their fangs into the Wildcats, finishing them off, 25-13.
Sophomore outside hitter Maria Yvett Garcia led FAMU with 14 kills and 20 digs, followed by rookie middle blocker Candelaria Herrera with 14 kills and sophomore outside hitter Nicole Abreu with 11 kills and 12 digs coming off of a lower back injury. Abreu was absent for the first meeting of the Rattlers and Wildcats.
Senior setter Valeria Lopez finished strong with 42 assists, and starting libero Valentina Carrasco carved out 16 digs.
The Lady Rattlers are only three games away from the MEAC Conference championship in Baltimore, MD.
