Volleyballers Sweep Two MEAC Matches At Lawson

TALLAHASSEE, FL. (Oct 23)The FAMU Women’s Volleyball team won their second straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match Tuesday, with a 3-0 victory over Savannah State University at Al Lawson Center.

FAMU (5-13, 4-1 MEAC), opened the match with an 8-3 lead, controlling the  firstset through the final, to win the set, 25-16.

FAMU started the second set with a 19-4 lead, keeping the lead all the way to the end of the set, dominating the Tigers to win the set 25-14.

SSU (2-16, 2-4 MEAC), opened the third set with an ace and kept competing point for point all the way, until Rattlers obtained the lead 16-11. But the Tigers fought back to tie the score at 21-21 and at 23-23,, but it wasn’t  enough, as the Rattlers regained control, winning the final set, 25-23.

Top performers for FAMU were, Karina Pressoir with 10 kills and two blocks, followed by Maria Yvett Garcia, with eight kills and nine digs and an ace, and Radka Dimitrova, with five kills and seven digs and two aces.

Aybuke Kokabiyik added five kills and one block. Ilayda Nurkan dished out 14 assists for FAMU and Elena Dimitrova 15 assists, while Valentina Carrasco led with 19 digs.

On Monday, FAMU returned to Mid-Eastern Athetlic Conference play, beating South Carolina State, 3-0 at the Al Lawson Center.

FAMU opened the match with a 7-3 run, keeping the lead until SCSU came close, at 10-9. FAMU then regained control and never looked back, winning the set 25-14.

The Bulldogs (1-21, 1-3 MEAC) started the second set with a 2-0 lead, but FAMU tied match at 2-2, then kept the lead the rest of the way, dominating the Bulldogs to win the set, 25-9.

FAMU started the third set with a  4-2 lead, building it to 12-8. The Bulldogs eventually tied the score at 12-12, fighting for each point. FAMU managed to push back to end up winning the set 25-19.

FAMU’s top performers were Maria Yvett Garcia, with 17 kills, five digs and a service ace, followed by Aybuke Kocabiyik with 10 kills and four blocks. Radka Dimitrova finished with five kills and seven digs.

Ilayda Nurkan dished out 28 assists for FAMU, while Valentina Carrasco led with 17 digs. Jessa Long also contributed  with four digs and two aces.

In the next match, FAMU faces Savannah State, Tuesday Oct 22nd at the Al Lawson Center at 6 p.m.

WHAT’S NEXT: FAMU’s next match will be against North Carolina A&T on Friday, Oct 26 at Al Lawson Center, staring at 7 p.m.
