Garcia Named Preseason MEAC Player Of The Year

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Aug. 2) - Florida A&M's star outside hitter Maria Yvett Garcia was named the 2019 Preseason Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Year, as voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.

The talented Garcia, a 6-1 performer from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic was a three-time regular season All-MEAC selection (2016, 2017, 2018) and was the 2016 MEAC Rookie of the Year.

Last season, she ranked #2 in the MEAC in kills in 2018, averaging 3.87 kills per set (383 in 99 sets), and was #3 in points per set (4.38). She also averaged 2.05 digs (203 in 99 sets), with 0.42 blocks (42 in 99 sets) per set.

Garcia posted season highs in kills (25) against VCU (9-8-18), and Morgan State in the MEAC Tournament opener (11-16-18).

Prior to arriving at FAMU in 2016, she was member of the Dominican Republic's Under 21 National Volleyball team which won a bronze medal in the 2015 World Championships in Turkey.

GARCIA - THE GRADUATE: On Friday, August 2, Garcia received her undergraduate degree from Florida A&M during Summer Commencement activities at the Al Lawson Center.

FAMU PICKED FIRST: The Rattler Women were picked to share the league's Southern Division title with arch rival Bethune-Cookman. Both teams finished with 88 points, followed by North Carolina A&T, which garnered 87 points.

FAMU received 10 of a possible 22 first place votes, following by A&T (7) and Bethune-Cookman (5).
