FAMU splits double header with NC Central

Game 1: Durham, N.C. (May 5th, 2018) – The Rattlers hit the road to Durham, North Carolina this weekend to take on the Eagles of NC Central in the first of a three-game MEAC series.

              Kaycee Reese homered to left field in the top of the third to put the Rattlers on top 1-0 after two and a half innings of play.

              NC Central tied the game at one run a piece in the bottom of the third, thanks to a Jordan Varela-Payne single up the middle that scored Carter Williams.

              The Eagles gained a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth as Corey Joyce scored on a Dominic Cuevas double to right center.

              The Rattlers quickly answered with a run in the top of the fifth. Jordan Curtis drove in John Capra with a single to third base to make it a 2-2 game going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

              NC Central regained the lead in the seventh. Chris Wright singled to right center to drive in Dominic Cuevas, giving NC Central a 3-2 lead after seven innings of play.

              Florida A&M answered with a five-run ninth inning. Ty Russ drove in the first run of the inning, scoring Octavien Moyer with a single to right field. Jordan Curtis then reached on a fielder’s choice sacrifice bunt that allowed John Capra to score. Dallas Oliver then drove in Russ and Curtis with a three-run homerun to left center, giving FAMU a 7-3 lead going to the bottom of the ninth.

              The Eagles put up one run in the bottom of the ninth when Andrew Valichka scored on a throwing error by the second baseman. That would be it for NC Central, as Florida A&M took game one by a final score of 7-4.

              Jamie Grant earned his third win of the season for the Rattlers (3-1), allowing one run (none earned) in 1.1 innings of relief. Starting pitcher Thomas Nicoll tossed 7 strong innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out three batters. Dylan Carlson earned his seventh save of the season after recording the final two outs of the game.

              Justice Sampson suffered the loss for NC Central, allowing five earned runs in 1 inning of relief. Starting pitcher Devin Sweet got the no-decision, allowing two earned runs through 7.1 innings of work, and Kameron Winburn recorded the last two outs of the top of the ninth.


Game 2: Durham, N.C. (May 5th, 2018) – Coming off a comeback win over the Eagles of NC Central, the Rattlers looked to take game two of Saturday’s double header.

              After three scoreless innings of play, NC Central got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning. Zach Michalski singled to center field to drive in Corey Joyce. Timmy Fischvogt then homered to right field, driving in Evan Holland and Michalski to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead going to the bottom of the fourth.

              They extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth thanks to a Corey Joyce single that scored Jordan Varela-Payne.

              The Rattlers got on the board in the top of the seventh as John Capra drove in Malachi Mitchell with a single up the middle to make it a 5-1 game. That would be the only run of the inning, as NC Central would hold on to win by a final score of 5-1.

              Chris Kernen got the win for the Eagles after allowing one earned run through seven innings of work.

              Dallas Oliver suffered the loss for the Rattlers (4-6), allowing five earned runs through 4 innings of work. Pedro de los Rios tossed a scoreless fifth inning and William Walter and Deven Shulstad combined to throw the sixth inning.

              The double header split puts FAMU at 22-25 on the season and 13-6 in MEAC play. The Rattlers will look to win the series tomorrow at 1:00 PM back at Durham Athletic Park.
