Daytona, Fl. (May 16th, 2018) – Florida A&M entered the MEAC tournament as the #2 seed in the Southern Division of the conference and would open up against the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore, who came in as the #3 seed from the Northern division.
The Hawks jumped on top early in the opening game of the tournament. Jamison Trower drove in Dominic DeBlasie with a double to left field to give his team a 1-0 lead after the first half inning of play.
FAMU took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Bret Maxwell drove in the first run of the game for the Rattlers, scoring Willis McDaniel with a single through the right side. Ty Russ later drove in Octavien Moyer with a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher.
Jacky Miles Jr. then blasted his fifth homerun of the year in the bottom of the third, driving in John Capra. Bret Maxwell would later ground out to third to allow Brian Davis to score and Willis McDaniel scored his second run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Kaycee Reese to extend the FAMU lead to 6-1 after three complete innings.
Maryland Eastern Shore shortened their deficit in the top of the fourth thanks to a Dwayne Marshall sacrifice fly to left field that scored Dominic DeBlaise to make it a 6-2 game after three and a half.
They would cut into the lead again with two runs in the fifth, as Dominic DeBlaise double to left center to drive in Dillon Oxyer and Tyler Friis to make it a 6-4 game going to the bottom of the fifth.
The Rattlers answered with 7 runs in the bottom half. Kaycee Reese scored the first run of the inning on a Dallas Oliver double to left center. John Capra then made it back-to-back doubles, driving in Ty Russ and Oliver. Capra scored shortly after on a Brian Davis single up the middle. Willis McDaniel tacked on two more, driving in Jacky Miles Jr. and Davis with a triple to left center. McDaniel then scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Octavien Moyer to extend the lead to 13-4 after five innings.
Kaycee Reese added to the lead with a solo homer (4) in the sixth to make it a 14-4 game after six innings of play.
The game was called after six and a half innings of play as the Rattlers won by a final score of 14-4. Ryan Anderson earned his fourth win of the season (4-5) after throwing a complete game. Anderson allowed four runs (two earned) through 7 innings while striking out five batters.
Maryland Eastern Shore starting pitcher Toby Hoskins suffered the loss, leaving the game early after allowing six earned runs through 3 innings of work. The Hawks would send a total of six pitchers to the mound over the course of the game.
The win puts the Rattlers in the winner’s bracket of the MEAC tournament and they will take on the Eagles of Coppin State on Thursday, May 17th at 3:30 PM back at Sliwa Stadium on the campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
