DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The FAMU Baseball team saw a 6-3 lead go by the boards here Sunday, as rival Bethune-Cookman rallied to edge the visiting Rattlers, 7-6.
FAMU (6-13, 1-2) scored three runs in the top of the third inning to tie the game, 3-3. Octavien Moyer’s two-run homer pulled the Rattlers within one run, scoring Seyjuan Lawrence, who drew a lead off walk. Brett Maxwell’s RBI single scored Jared Weber for a tie score five batter later.
In the fourth, FAMU vaulted ahead, 6-3, as Willis McDaniel lashed an RBI double to score Ryan Coscarella, before Jared Weber singled in McDaniel and Moyer for a 6-3 lead.
The Wildcats answered with a three-run rally in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score, then scored a single run in the fifth for a 7-6 lead.
Jamie Grant (0-2) took the loss in relief of starter Josh Barr, who worked three and two-thirds before being lifted. Grant worked one and a third, giving up a solo homer to B-CU in the bottom of the fifth..
FAMU finished with six hits total, with Moyer and Weber both driving in a pair of runs.
ON DECK: FAMU is at Jacksonville Wednesday, then will host Savannah State Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Moore-Kittles Field.
