By: Florida A&M Sports Information

Durham, N.C. (May 6th, 2018) – Florida A&M came into Sunday hoping to win their second weekend series over the Eagles of NC Central this season.

After splitting the Saturday double header, FAMU jumped on top early in the rubber match, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning. John Capra belted his fourth homerun of the season, driving in Bret Maxwell and Willis McDaniel to give the Rattlers an early 3-0 lead.

NC Central answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half. Timmy Fischvogt singled up the middle to score Dominic Cuevas and Andrew Valichka, shortening the Eagles’ deficit to 3-2.

John Capra stayed hot for the Rattlers, driving in Willis McDaniel and Brian Davis with a single to left field, extending the FAMU lead to 5-2 after two and a half innings of play.

This lead wouldn’t last long however, as Zach Michalski doubled down the left field line to score Corey Joyce and Jordan Varela-Payne. Michalski then scored on a throwing error by the shortstop to tie up the game at five after three full innings.

Florida A&M would gain a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh as a throwing error by the third baseman allowed Jordan Curtis to score from third on a Willis McDaniel ground ball fielder’s choice.

They added an insurance run in the top of the ninth thanks to a Brian Davis double to right that scored Jacky Miles to make it a 7-5 game going to the bottom of the ninth.

The two-run lead would be enough as Florida A&M won by a final score of 7-5. Jamie Grant earned his second win of the weekend (4-1), throwing 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Starting Pitcher Ryan Anderson allowed five runs (four earned) through 3 innings of work before giving way to Jeremiah McCollum, who threw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Dylan Carlson earned his second save of the weekend (8) after tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

Justice Sampson suffered the loss for NC Central, giving up the go ahead run in the seventh inning. Starting pitcher Carter Kovalcik left the game after giving up three earned runs in 2 innings of work, as the Eagles sent a total of eight pitchers to the mound in this game.

The win gives FAMU two series wins over NC Central this season, and the Rattlers are now 23-25 on the season (14-6 MEAC). FAMU will play a make-up game in Greensboro, N.C. tomorrow at 1:00 as they will take on the Aggies of N.C. A&T State University.
