FAMU falls to Coppin State in close contest

Tallahassee, Fl. (May 17th, 2018) – Due to several weather delays, the Rattlers came off a big win over Maryland Eastern Shore to play a late night winner’s bracket game against the Eagles of Coppin State University.

              The Eagles scored first in this one, putting up one run in the bottom of the first. Caleb Duhay drove in the first run, scoring Andres Santana with a single through the right side to give his team a 1-0 lead after an inning of play.

              The Rattlers tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third as Jacky Miles Jr. drove in Dallas Oliver with a double to right center.

              Coppin State regained the lead in the fourth on a Marcos Castillo RBI single to left that scored Derek Lohr to make it a 2-1 game.

              FAMU took their first lead of the game with two runs in the top of the fifth. Jacky Miles Jr. drove in Ty Russ with an infield hit to shortstop, and then scored on a Brian Davis single up the middle to make it a 3-2 game after four and a half innings of play.

              Coppin State’s Caleb Duhay then tied the game with a solo homerun to left center in the sixth. They then gained the lead as Nazier McIlwain and Derek Lohr scored on an error by the shortstop to make it a 5-3 game at the end of the sixth.

              Neither team would score in the final three innings as Coppin State won by a final score of 5-3. Branden Redfern earned the win, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings of relief. Starting pitcher Jahmon Taylor allowed three runs (one earned) in 4.2 innings of work, and Corey Treyes earned the save after throwing a scoreless ninth.

              FAMU starting pitcher Thomas Nicoll suffered the loss (3-8), allowing five runs (three earned) through 6 innings while striking out nine batters. Jamie Grant added two scoreless innings of relief for the Rattlers.

              Florida A&M is now 25-29 on the season and 1-1 in the MEAC Tournament. The Rattlers will face the winner of Norfolk State vs. Bethune-Cookman on Friday afternoon. Game time is to be determined based on weather.
