Daytona Beach, Fl. (May 19th, 2018) – The Rattlers opened up day four of the MEAC Tournament with a win or go home scenario as they looked to eliminate the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman.

The Rattlers drew first blood in this one as Brian Davis drove in John Capra with a double down the right field line to give FAMU a 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning.

Bethune-Cookman tied up the game at 1-1 thanks to a Kyle Corbin infield hit to first that scored Jameel Edney from third.

B-CU took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Jameel Edney advanced to third on a sac bunt by Zach Spivey and scored on a throwing error by the pitcher.

The Wildcats extended their lead by five runs on four base hits to make it a 7-1 game in the fifth. Jordan Stacy drove in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field, followed by another sacrifice fly by Jameel Edney and RBI singles by Michael Deeb, Zach Spivey, and Giovany Lorenzo.

B-CU made it an 8-1 game in the seventh as Adonis Lao singled through the right side to drive in Zach Spivey.

First team all-MEAC catcher Jacky Miles Jr. helped the Rattlers shorten the lead by a run with a solo homer to left center field. Willis McDaniel followed with a triple to right field and then scored on a wild pitch to make it an 8-3 game after eight innings of play.

Bethune-Cookman got one run back in the top of the ninth thanks to a Nate Sterijevski sacrifice fly that scored Zach Spivey to make the lead 9-3 headed to the bottom of the ninth.

The Wildcats ultimately held on to win by a final score of 9-3. David Mata earned the win for Bethune-Cookman, throwing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Starting pitcher Anthony Maldonado allowed one earned run through 4.1 innings of work while Isaak Gutierrez allowed two earned runs in the final three innings of the game.

Starting pitcher Dallas Oliver suffered the loss for the Rattlers (3-7), allowing five runs (four earned) through 4 innings while striking out two. Jamie Grant tossed the fifth, followed by Chandellor Benton in the sixth. Benton recorded the first two outs of the seventh before a seven hour rain delay. After the delay, Jeremiah McCollum threw 1.1 scoreless innings and Dylan Carlson threw the ninth.

The loss eliminated the Rattlers from the MEAC Tournament and ended their 2018 campaign. Florida A&M ended the season with a 25-30 overall record. Despite the early exit from the conference tournament, the 2018 season was highlighted by a 2nd place regular season finish in the Southern division of the MEAC, and FAMU also placed six players on all-MEAC teams at the end of the regular season.
