Rattlers Come Up Short Against Spartans Monday

NORFOLK, Va. (Jan. 29) - The FAMU Men's Basketball team came up short in its' bid for a third straight win Monday, dropping an 80-71 road decision to the Norfolk State Spartans at Echols Hall.

FAMU (4-19, 3-4 MEAC) trailed by just eight points, 36-28 at the break, after shooting 29 percent from the floor in the opening frame. The Rattlers were outdueled on the boards as well, as the Spartans (6-16, 4-3 MEAC) finished with a 44-25 rebounding edge.

NSU was able to hold the Rattlers to just 11 second chance points, pulling down 31 defensive boards on the night.

The Rattlers' three-point ace, senior Marcus Barham had an off night from the floor, hitting one of his nine deep range tries, and three of 17 shots overall, to finish with a season low seven points.

Setting the pace for FAMU offensively was the trio of junior guard Justin Ravenel, who scored a game high 21 points, going 5-of-8 from distance; senior forward Desmond Williams, who added 19 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Elijah Mayes finished with 16 points and three assists.

FAMU pressed the issue in the second half, as the Spartans barely held off the Rattlers, 44-43 on the scoreboard.

WHAT'S NEXT: The Rattlers will host Savannah State Wednesday night in the Al Lawson Center. Tip time will be 8:00 p.m..
