TALLAHASSEE,Fl (Mar.1) – The Lady Rattlers (6-22, 4-11 MEAC) fell short against the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats (22-5,14-1 MEAC) 62-42 in the Al Lawson Center.

Unable to keep up with the Wildcats’ momentum, the Rattlers were struggled to find the basket, giving the Wildcats more opportunity to score.

With a slow start in the first quarter by FAMU, the Wildcats took advantage and took a lead they would never relinquish. Missed layups and being outrebound by B-CU put the Lady Rattlers in an insurmountable hole, scoring just nine points in the quarter.

“We just need to slow down and take our time shooting the ball in the basket, I don’t believe it’s nerves because of the rivalry game we just need to keep up the momentum,” said by head coach LeDawn Gibson.

Seniors Florence Ouattara and Shakeyrra Morrison led the team with a total of 22 rebounds. With Ouattara leading the team with 11 points.

FAMU trailed the B-CU 30-15, taking the double digit deficit into halftime.

After trailing the Lady Wildcats in the first half the Rattlers came looking to cut into the lead of the Lady Wildcats in the third period, but a physical and dominating performance by the MEAC’s top women’s team did not show any signs of weakness.

The Rattlers came out in the second allowing an 11-0 run by the Lady Wildcats. Aided by Morrison’s aggressiveness on the boards, the Lady Rattlers were able to close the gap somewhat in the third quarter.

Coming to the end of period with six minutes remaining the Wildcats led the Rattlers 55-27. FAMU wouldn’t roll over as senior Ecenur Yurdakul scored in her last home game as a Lady Rattler. In the end, it would be a moderately easy victory for B-CU with the final score of 62-42.

“I take negative things to motivate me unlike other people take positive things to motive them, I’m going to take this loss and get ready for the championship because I believe we have a chance to make it to the top just like the top teams,” said senior guard Florence Ouattara.

The Wildcats were lead by junior guard Ashanti Hunt with 12 points and junior guard Angel Golden with 11 points.

Both teams will await the seedings for next week’s MEAC basketball tournament at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va.
