LUBBOCK, Tx. (Nov. 15) – The FAMU Women’s Basketball team continued their four-game pre-holiday road tour here Wednesday morning, dropping an 82-63 decision to the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
FAMU (0-2) had three players in double figures led by junior Florence Ouattara, who led all scorers in the game with 23 points, to go with eight rebounds. Senior Texas native Dawn King (Waxahachee) pumped in 17 points, junior Shalunda Burney-Robinson added 10 points and four rebounds, with senior Shakeyrra Morrison pulling down a team-high nine rebounds.
Texas Tech (1-1) had four players score in double digits, paced by Brielle Blaire’s double double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Brittany Brewer added 15 points and six boards, Dayo Olabode chipped in 12 points and six rebounds, and Lyndsey Whilby rounded out the quartet with 11 points.
Baskets by Ouattara and King staked FAMU to an early 4-2 lead with 8:20 left in the opening quarter, before the Red Raiders went on an 18-10 run to close the period ahead, 22-14.
Tech shot 46 percent from the floor to 28.6 for the Rattlers, outpacing FAMU, 21-10 in the second period, leading by as much as 20 points, to grab a 43-24 advantage by halftime.
The Raiders edged out FAMU, 20-19 on the scoreboard in the third period, then the Rattlers outscored Tech, 20-19 in the final stanza.
WHAT’S NEXT: FAMU heads north to Manhattan, Kansas for a Friday evening (5:30 p.m. Central Time) clash against the Kansas State Wildcats…. Sunday, FAMU closes the tour in Omaha, Nebraska against the Omaha University Mavericks at 1:00 p.m. Central Time.
HOME OPENER NEXT WEDNESDAY: FAMU opens its’ home schedule next Wednesday against Sacred Heart University, tipping off at 12 Noon in the Al Lawson Center, where the Rattlers will celebrate Education Day.
