MONTEVALLO, Ala. | The Florida A&M University men’s and women’s cross country teams began the 2019 season on Saturday at the Falcon Classic, hosted by the University of Montevallo.
The Lady Rattlers placed eighth with 220 points, while Samford won the meet with 28 points. Alabama (68), Mississippi College (103), Alabama-Huntsville (108), Montevallo (135), Alabama State (191) and Spring Hill (195) placed second through seventh. Wallace State (241), West Georgia (293), West Alabama (317), Auburn-Montgomery (322), Delta State (346), Martin Methodist (359), Marion Military Institute (433) and Miles (468) rounded out the 16-team field.
Mercy Rotich paced Florida A&M with a 14th-place finish on the 6K course, with a time of 19:06.15. Teammate Shalet Mitei placed 19th at 19:39.33, while Emmax Kiplagat (32nd) finished with a time of 20:35.39. Sharon Kibiwott and Itiana Redding also competed in the race.
On the men’s side, the Rattlers finished the 8K course with 359 points to claim the 13th spot, while Alabama-Huntsville won the meet with 37 points. Samford (58), Montevallo (102), Mississippi College (113), West Alabama (140), West Georgia (161), Spring Hill (227), Wallace State (233), Point (265), Alabama State (280), Auburn-Montgomery (336) and Marion Military Institute (359) finished second through 12th. Morehouse (391), Belhaven (404), Martin Methodist (415) and Birmingham Southern (447) rounded out the 17-team field.
Brian Kiprop led Florida A&M with a 13th-place finish, with a time of 25:24.81, while Festus Kemboi claimed 23rd at 25:43.54
Both Florida A&M teams will be back in action next weekend (Sept. 14) at the Mountain Dew Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida, in Gainesville, Fla.
