Tallahassee, Fla. | The Florida A&M softball team capped off a huge weekend, with two huge victories over South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon at the Rattler Softball Complex.
FAMU (5-19, 4-7 MEAC), who beat SCSU (2-15, 1-7 MEAC) on a three-run walk-off homerun on Friday night, defeated the Bulldogs 6-0 and 5-4 to clinch the series on senior day.
Game 1
Senior pitcher
Gabriella Williams (3-3) put on a dominating performance in her final home game, tossing a complete game shutout giving up just two hits. She also fanned two batters.
Seriah Brokenborough and
Zaria Hall led the Rattlers with hits, both going 2-for-3. Borkenborough added two RBI.
In the first inning, FAMU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. Brokenborough hit a two-RBI single to centerfield to, putting the Rattlers up early. Kenyaaamari Jones drove the third run of the inning home when she dropped a sacrifice bunt down, plating
Sydnee Worthy.
In the second inning,
Zaria Hall got on base with a bunt single. She then stole second and third, putting the Rattlers back in scoring position.
Melkayla Irvis grounded out to second base to score Hall.
FAMU tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning. Hall picked up her second base hit of the day and scored one batter later when Irvis hit an RBI double to left centerfield.
Kaylin Rhone then sent a sacrifice fly to centerfield, bringing Irvis around to score run number six.
The Rattlers shut the Bulldogs down the rest of the way to cruise to the 6-0 victory.
Game 2
In the second contest, FAMU put up five runs in the first inning and that's all they would need to beat SCSU.
Irvis drew a leadoff walk, immediately stealing second base. Two batters later, Brokenborough reached base on an error, scoring Rhone and Irvis.
Destiny Cuevas hit a one out triple, bring Brokenborough around to score. Another error allowed
Brandice Boatwright to reach base and score Cuevas and stretch the Rattlers' lead to 4-0. Irvis rounded out the scoring when she laced am RBI single up the middle and put FAMU up 5-0.
SCSU did add four runs over the next six innings but couldn't overcome the fast start by the Rattlers.
Boatwright (1-7) picked up her first win of the season, surrendering four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
On Deck
FAMU travels to Montgomery, Ala. to face Southwestern Athletic Conference foe (SAWAC) Alabama State in a doubleheader on April 7. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. EST.
